New Delhi, Aug 09: Congress president Sonia Gandhi today hit out at the BJP-led coalition at the Centre for its "unprecedented" denial of vital documents to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament on Kargil arms procurement and accused it of taking bribes in the purchase of coffins for martyrs in the conflict. "What expectation one can have from such a government which does not show respect to the nation's martyrs," she said launching party's campaign for the coming assembly elections in Delhi at a rally here on the occasion of 'Quit India' Day.
In a hard-hitting speech, Gandhi said the refusal of the documents to the PAC by the government was unprecedented in the country's parliamentary history.
In an apparent reference to the alleged dropping of charges against Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and several others in the Babri Masjid demolition case, Gandhi targeted the Vajpayee government for "forcing" CBI to do so to "save" its ministers. "What justice can one expect from such a government," she asked.
Obviously referring to the political developments in Arunachal Pradesh, Gandhi charged the BJP-led coalition with dislodging a democratically-elected government in the North East as part of a conspiracy to fulfil its "selfish political ends".
She alleged that similar attempts were being made in other north eastern states.
Taking a dig at the saffron party for raising the name of Lord Ram whenever elections are round the corner, she said that what they were doing was nothing but hoodwinking the Lord himself.
"Hey Ram! Save the country from such devotees who are bent upon destroying the 'maryada' of the Lord," the Congress leader said.
Gandhi prefaced her criticism by noting that she did not want to raise the current political situation at such a solemn occasion but has been compelled to do so as the atmosphere was being vitiated all over the country.
