Moscow, Feb 15: The death toll in Moscow’s swimming pool roof collapse has risen to 23, including four children, a news agency said. ''110 injured people have been admitted in different hospitals, Russian Emergency Situation Minister Sergei Shoigu said today.
The giant glass roof of the swimming pool, in the Transvaal Park, in Yasenevo district, in south-western Moscow, collapsed last night under the heavy weight of snow. There were about 600 people in the water park at the time of the accident.
The number of casualties may rise as several people are still reported to be buried under the rubble.
Rescue teams have been working round-the-clock to save the people still trapped under the debris in temperature minus 20 degree. Four of the survivors in hospitals are reported to be in critical condition, 16 in very serious and 43 in serious condition.
A television report said that the work to clear the rubble in the water park may continue for two days as the layer of the debris covering the pool is 1.5 to 2 metres thick.
The pool is filled up with concrete beams, which are currently being removed with lifting cranes. Rescuers now use special heat generators to prevent frostbites of people, still under the debris. Bureau Report
