Jakarta, Sept 01: Two volcanoes have erupted in different parts of Indonesia, spreading hot dust and ash over neighboring villages, officials and news reports said today. Both volcanoes - Mt. Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores Island in the south and Mt. Soputan in northern Sulawesi erupted yesterday, said Gede Swantika, chief of Indonesia's Volcanological Agency.
He said the 1,584-meter -high Lewotobi, spewed hot dust and ash over a radius of 12 kilometers and burned underbrush on its slope. Swantika said there were no immediate reports of casualties, but radio reports said hot dust from the volcanoes had damaged crops on the mountainsides. The reports quoted local officials as saying they were preparing to evacuate villagers.
The 1,783-meter (5,849-foot)-high mount Soputan last erupted in mid-July, spewing lava and clouds of dust high into the air that fell on the provincial capital Manado, around 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the north. The city is about 2,160 kilometers (1,350 miles) northeast of Jakarta. Bureau Report
