Bangalore, Dec 15: Karnataka government would utilise, under an agreement, the telecom network of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd for implementing its ambitious wide area network. After signing an MoU with BSNL, in the presence of company chairman Prithpal Singh, Karnataka additional chief secretary K K Misra said today the agreement was for a period of eight years and would help the state reach out to government offices till the taluk level.

"IT (BSNL) will ensure connectivity up to the taluk level," Misra said, adding the government, which had earlier tied up with private telecom players to use their optic fibre for its connectivity, had to opt for BSNL for its OFC network throughout the state. He said that the wan, to cost about Rs 140 crore over eight to 10 years, would be handed over to a private firm on a built-operate-transfer basis, and a consultant had been appointed.

Misra said that Wan would enable offices up to the taluk level to access voice, data and video files and help the administration introduce electronic files (e-files).

"All department files would be in electronic format and it would be easy to send files and improve efficiency. Ultimately, it will help save us on telephone costs," he said. Punjab had signed similar MoU with BSNL and in the offing were Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal, Singh said.
