Jammu, Oct 08: The eight-day Navratra festival, Navdurgotsava, commenced at Katra, the base camp of Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu division here.

The festival, which will witness a cultural extravaganza with participants from different parts of the country, was inaugurated yesterday. Daily colourful processions, song and dance performances by artists from Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Punjab and J&K and handloom and handicrafts exhibition are part of the festivities, the chairman of the organizing committee of the festival, M K Dwivedi said.

The festival will help to send a message across the country and abroad that there is no threat to pilgrims in the area, Dwivedi said. The festival was being jointly organised by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, State Tourism Department and Union ministry of information and broadcasting among others.
