Chennai, Apr 26: BJP president Venkaiah Naidu today asked all political parties to support the Centre for its proposal to bring in legislation to curb en bloc defections, limit the size of the ministries to ten per cent of the house strength, scrap the "illegal immigration detection tribunal" and to control population in the country. Addressing a press meet here, he said the anti-defection law had not served its purpose and had now become a "laughing stock" in the eyes of the people. "It is high time that the law is done away with."

He said that he personally felt that no person who changed parties should be given any government office at least for two years. "It will be ideal if all political parties come forward to support this voluntarily."
Naidu said there was "unfounded" criticism that the central ministry was "jumbo-sized." The combined strength of parliament was 791 and NDA government was well within the limit. In states where there was bicameral legislature, the combined strength should be taken for the size of the ministry, he said.
