UK, Oct 02: Sir Bobby Robson has admitted Newcastle's Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after seeing them slump to a 2-0 defeat against Juventus. The loss in Turin leaves the Magpies bottom of Group E with no points and just three games remaining.
"It is almost impossible," said the Newcastle boss, whose side need to finish third to gain entry into the Uefa Cup.
Alessandro del Piero grabbed both of Juve's goals, the first coming from a free-kick that left goalkeeper Shay Given rooted to the spot.
"I don't think I can grumble about anything. We gave everything we had," said Robson. "We fought hard. We haven't been out-played and we gave them a very good game.
"As often happens, the first goal of the match wins it - and Del Piero got it from a free-kick."
Juventus top the group with seven points, two ahead of Feyenoord and three in front of Dynamo Kiev. Newcastle's next game is against Juve at St James' Park on 23 October.
