Jerusalem, July 04: The Israeli army said today it arrested 12 Palestinians in the West Bank overnight, mostly activists from Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah group suspected of involvement in anti-Israeli attacks.
Six were arrested in the southern city of Hebron while the others were detained in the north of the West Bank, a military spokesman said. In the Gaza Strip, an Israeli army post on the border with Egypt came under anti-tank rocket and grenade attack but no one was injured, the spokesman added.

An Israeli lorry driving near the West Bank town of Qalqilya also came under attack from suspected militants early today, again without causing injury.
There has been a marked drop in such attacks since the main Palestinian radical groups agreed to call a halt to anti-Israeli attacks last Sunday, but sporadic violence has continued.

Mahmud Shawa, a leader of al-Aqsa martyrs brigades, an armed offshoot of Fatah, was shot dead in Qalqilya on Wednesday night as he resisted arrest by Israeli troops.
