Chittagong (Bangladesh), Jan 05: A tribesman was killed and another injured after a gunbattle with troops in Bangladesh's rebellious southeastern hill regions, security sources said today. The army cordoned off a house in the remote Rangamati Hill district's Borokulpara village yesterday and members of the dissident tribal United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) opened fire triggering the brief gunbattle, they said.
One tribesman was killed instantly and another injured in the shootout, the sources said. Another eight were arrested and handed over to the police after being questioned by the army.
In November three UPDF men were killed and 12 injured in a fierce gunbattle in the same hill district.

The UPDF is opposed to a 1997 Peace Pact which ended two decades of insurgency in the region.
The incident comes amid reports that violence is on the rise due to a lack of development in the scenic hill region bordering India and Myanmar. Bureau Report
