London, May 28: Roger Pilkington, a sailing enthusiast who wrote a series of books about boating trips through Europe, has died at 88, his family said. Pilkington died May 5, they announced, not giving the cause of death.
He wrote 19 installments in his "Small Boat" series, recounting trips to and through the waterways of Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and his native Britain, among other nations.
In "View From the Shore," published in 1995, Pilkington recalled life between his boating trips, including time he spent studying in Germany just after Adolf Hitler came to power.

He received a doctorate in genetics from Cambridge University. His other books included "Thames Waters," published in 1956, "How Boats Are Navigated," published in 1962, "One Foot in France," published in 1992 and "History and Legends of the European Waterways," 1998.
