Mumbai, July 24: Police today opposed the bail plea of Mohammed Ali Shaikh, approver in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, who did not support the case of the prosecution leading to acquittal of 16 accused. After hearing arguments advanced by prosecutor ujjwal Nikam, Sessions Judge D V Marathe adjourned the matter to august 12 as petitioner's counsel Majeed Memon was absent.

Opposing his bail, Nikam urged that Shaikh was deeply involved in the crime. He had attended a conspiracy meeting in Dubai where it was decided to kill Gulshan Kumar. The meeting was also attended allegedly by Abu Salem, music composer Nadeem Akhtar Saifee and assailant Mohammed Rauf alias Raja.

Abu Salem is absconding, Nadeem was discharged by a London court from extradition proceedings launched by Indian government against him while Rauf Raja was convicted in this case by a sessions court. The prosecutor also submitted that a car and weapon used in the crime was recovered at the instance of Shaikh. An expert confirmed the weapon was used to kill the audio king Gulshan Kumar, he said.

Nikam pleaded that Shaikh would abscond if he was released on bail. He may even tamper with evidence as he was the main conspirator. The pardon tendered to him earlier had been revoked and he was now an accused in this case.

Sixty five-year-old Shaikh was chargesheeted recently by police after a sessions court delivered its verdict in the Gulshan Kumar murder case on April 24 this year. He is now facing a fresh trial for his complicity in the murder of the audio king and is seeking bail in this case.
