New Delhi, Nov 26: Union law minister Jana Krishnamurthi today called upon the legal fraternity to take steps to instill confidence in people about the efficacy of the justice delivery system. Inaugurating a seminar on the occasion of National Law Day here, he asked the lawyers and judges to set high standards in life and ensure that justice was not only done but appeared to have been done to all equally and alike.
About the pathetic affair of criminal justice system, the minister said for every crime or offence committed in the country, only 10 per cent were reported. Out of them only 10 per cent reach the court for want of investigation. And out of these cases, the conviction rate is only 10 per cent, he said.
Krishnamurthi also gave away National Law Day awards to eminent legal luminaries including the former Chief Justice of India Justice A M Ahmadi.
Justice Ahmadi was conferred with the award for his contribution in the field of administration of justice.
Others conferred with the award instituted by Indian Council of Jurists for their contribution in various areas of law were additional Solicitor General Altaf Ahmed (criminal law), L M Singhvi (constitutional law), Dipankar P Gupta (civil law), Sarosh Zaiwallah (international arbitration), Som Mandal (corporate law), senior advocate P N Misra (law in technology), B A Aggarwal, joint secretary, ministry of law and justice (legal affairs) and Bar Council of India member Natubhai S Bhatt (legal education).
