Chennai, Nov 06: Chargesheets have been filed against former AIADMK minister, S Kannappan and former party MLA, Theni V Paneerselvam by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in a Salem court and a special court here respectively. The chargesheet has been filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the former PWD minister Kannappan and several other officials in the highways department, khadi and villages industries board and contractors.


The directorate alleged that the accused, numbering over 50, entered into a conspiracy and committed criminal breach of trust on government funds in the purchase of various items for the highways department, causing a wrongful loss of Rs 6.20 crore to the government.

Chief Judicial Magistrate, Salem, after taking the chargesheet on file, ordered issue of summons to the accused for appearance in the court on November 10. The case was registered in 1994 when AIADMK was in power.

Meanwhile, the chargesheet filed in a special court here against Paneerselvam, a former AIADMK MLA from Bodinaickanur, alleged that he had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 21 lakh 'disproportionate to his known sources of income' during his tenure as MLA from 1991 to 1996.
