Lucknow, Sept 19: Flood situation remained grim in Uttar Pradesh today even as relief and rescue operations were stepped up in about 10,000 affected villages where 424 people have died so far. State's revenue commissioner A K Singh said that so far 424 people have died in floods and incidents of house collapse followed by heavy rains.
About a thousand cattle heads have also perished in the floods which has affected 9,576 villages of which 1,288 remained submerged.
Singh said relief and rescue operations were going on a war footing.
Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav made an aerial survey of Varanasi and Allahabad divisions and ordered on-the-spot assessment of loss of life and property and immediate help to affected families.
The state has declared 32 of the 71 districts as flood affected and suspended recovery of revenue and irrigation dues there.

Financial assistance was being provided for undertaking repair of collapsed and damaged houses, roads and bridges.
