Kancheepuram, Feb 25: Ryuzo Kikuchi, Consul General of Japan at Chennai, today inaugurated two health centres in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, built by voluntary, health, education, rural development society, a voluntary agency sponsored by Kanchi Sankara Mutt. The centres, at Damal and Thandalam villages of the districts, were inaugurated in separate ceremonies.
The Kanchi Mutt seer Sri Jayendra Saraswathi presided. The consul general said the Japanese government has a policy of helping community health care projects in India.
The grant assistance scheme for grassroots projects is part of the official development assistance policy of Japan, Kikuchi said. Started in 1990 at Chennai, the project had an initial outlay of 1683 US dollars and was enhanced to 3,79,152 US dollars, benefitting southern states in 66 projects of education, environment, health care, immunisation, and rural development, Kikuchi added.
T P Radhakrishnan, convenor of NGO Vherds, which is developing Dhamal village, said through the pioneering efforts of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, Damal has been benefitted, specially through temple renovation and self-support schemes. There is a plan to have an effluent treatment and water recycling plant for the village, besides 50 group houses for Dalits, Radhakrishnan said. Bureau Report
