New Delhi, Feb 16: Congress today said it hoped to forge an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Mayawati, and said any alliance with that party would not be restricted to Uttar Pradesh alone. ''If there is an alliance with the BSP, it may extend to other areas where the BSP has influence. This is as is the case of our alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party,'' Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Pranab Mukherjee told newspersons here today.

Asked about the dinner meeting between party president Sonia Gandhi and Mayawati here last night, Mukherjee said, ''Talks are still going on with the BSP for inducting it in the Secular Front. However, we hope to forge alliance with the BSP.''
To repeated questions about the present status of the discussion between the two parties, he said alliances were announced only when they materialised. ''It is difficult to announce about the progress of alliances.''
On the progress of talks with the Telengana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in Andhra Pradesh, Mukherjee said, ''Talks are still going on.''

Referring to the ongoing seat sharing exercise with the NCP, he said another round of meeting would be held on February 19.

When asked if Varun Gandhi's joining BJP would mean sharing of the Nehru-Gandhi legacy, Mukherjee said he did not think so. However, joining a political party was one's individual decision, he said.
