New Delhi, May 05: BJP today demanded a high-level enquiry into the attack on senior party leader and Union Minister Tapan Sikdar when he was campaigning for the party in the panchayat elections in West Bengal. Condemning the attack on him by CPI(M) workers, party spokesman and general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi sought the Centre's intervention to probe into the "collapse" of the functioning of various constitutional and democratic institutions in the state during the panchayat polls.
He demanded that West Bengal government stop the "tactics of terror" being unleashed against opposition leaders and workers with the "help of police".
"The Left Front government must respect law and not destroy democratic norms for political gains. The panchayat elections are essentially to strengthen the roots of a much cherished democracy but it is very unfortunate that a concerted attempt is being made in West Bengal by both the ruling party and the government to develop a situation so as not to allow opposition parties participate in panchayat elections," Naqvi said.
