Moscow, Feb 26: Russia is to bid for the modernisation of T-72 tanks of the Indian Army in a global tender floated by the defence ministry, closely competing with Israel, Poland and Ukraine. Two fully modernised T-72M1 tanks would be demonstrated to the Indian defence officials in may, Director General of Russian conventional arms agency Alexander Nozdrachyov said.
The modernised tanks are to be equipped with the diesel engine similar to the one fitted on the T-90S main battle tanks recently acquired by India from Russia, Arms-Tass agency reported. The Tussian modernisation offer also provides for the upgradation fire-control systems to the level of latest T-90S with the help of thermal imaging devises for night vision, it said. The Indian army has about 1700 t-72 main battle tanks acquired or built under soviet license at heavy vehicles factory at Avadi in Tamil Nadu.
