Surat, Jan 09: Over 40 per cent of the total 2.58 lakh electorate today exercised their franchise for the by-elections to Surat (West) Assembly seat.
The polling, which began on a slow note this morning, gathered pace at the fag-end of the day and ended peacefully, official sources said here. The elections to this seat were countermanded following the death of BJP candidate Hemant Chapatwala on December 9.

Polling was peaceful at all 269 booths in the constituency where heavy bandobast was maintained. No untoward incident was reported so far, Surat Collector M K Das said.

Counting of votes would take place on January 11, election officials said.

In the assembly elections held on December 12, out of the total 181 seats of the house, the BJP won 126 seats, Congress 51 and others four.
