“The United States is to offer a $ 10 million reward for information leading to the capture of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar,” Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has announced.
“Within a short period of time, there will be reward money broadly communicated for a discrete number of Taliban officials,” said Rumsfeld on Thursday, adding that the Taliban leader would be among that number and the reward in his case would be $ 10 million.
Omar disappeared from view after the fall to opposition forces of the militia's last bastion, the southern city of Kandahar, 10 days ago. A reward of $ 25 million has been placed on the head of Osama bin Laden, the alleged mastermind of the terrorist attacks of September 11 on the United States.
The Taliban's refusal to hand over bin Laden triggered the October 7 launch of the US campaign in Afghanistan. Bureau Report
