Three anthrax-laced letters sent to US senate majority leader Tom Daschle and two media organizations were likely written and sent by the same person, the FBI has announced.
It is highly probable, bordering on certainty, that all three letters were authored by the same person, The FBI said in a statement on Friday. Investigators have drawn up a linguistic and behavioral assessment of the suspect and the writings, hoping that by releasing some details about the letter, a citizen might come forward with information about the culprit.
The FBI statement said the letters sent to NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and to the New York Post were identical copies. The third letter, to Daschle, contained a slightly different message and anthrax that was Much more refined, more potent and more easily disbursed than (that in) letters one and two.
The likely suspect is described as an adult male, likely to have a job that requires little contact with the public, and who had access to laboratory equipment and a knowledge of hazardous materials.
The FBI noted that the suspect did not select victims randomly and could be a loner who lacks the personal skills necessary to confirm others. Four people have died in the anthrax scare, and more than a dozen others have contracted either inhalation anthrax or skin anthrax, a less dangerous form of the disease.
