It is the Italian's sixth pole in 12 races this season.
The Repsol Honda star recorded the fastest qualifying lap time of the season - one minute 49.038 seconds - to finish ahead of the Ducati of Loris Capirossi.
Spaniard Sete Gibernau was third fastest with Max Biaggi taking fourth.
Rossi said: "It went well today and I'm always very happy to make pole position.

"The team is doing a good job but we need to sort out some small problems and we will hopefully find the solutions tomorrow.
"Hopefully we will be able to do a good warm-up and be ready for the race."
Northern Ireland's Jeremy McWilliams was down in 18th place on his KR Proton, while Chris Burns was last in 24th.
In the 250cc class, Welsh teenager Chaz Davies was 18th on his Aprilia, with Toni Elias once again leading the way.
