Hundreds of farmers on Monday began an indefinite sit-in in Jind to protest Sunday's police action in which one farmer was killed and in support of their demands, including waiver of power bills. Women also participated in the dharna in Kandela village as agitation by farmers belonging to Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) continued for the second day on Monday. The farmers are also demanding withdrawal of cases registered against BKU leaders in connection with the stir.
Trouble erupted on Sunday when farmers tried to break the police cordon in an attempt to stage a rally in support of their demands in violation of prohibitory orders, police said. Reports said some villagers smashed window panes of a car belonging to a DSP and held hostage a head constable and an employee of police department on Sunday night.
Two family members of DSP travelling in the car were allowed to proceed to their destination. The employee was set free by the villagers on Monday.
