Tamil Tiger rebels attacked army and police camps in the country's northeast - killing at least six security men and wounding 23 others in its first major military offensives since parliamentary elections last week, Defence Ministry and Tamil sources said Wednesday. Retaliating, the army killed six rebels, military spokesman Brig. Sanath Karunaratne said.
The two attacks, launched almost at the same time before midnight Tuesday, also destroyed an important telecommunication center, snapping hundreds of telephone lines at homes and offices in the area, Tamil sources said.
