Visakhapatnam, Mar 24: Armed with increased budgetary allocations, navy would take up a series of new projects this year including land-ship tank and anti-submarine warfare curvettes, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Madhvendra Singh said today.
Among the ongoing projects, the first ship of 'Project
17' will be launched next month while construction of Delhi
class 'destroyer' will commence this month, the naval chief
said while participating in an impressive naval investiture
ceremony at the eastern naval command headquarters here.
He said five more warships, including three 'Talwar class destroyers', would be inducted into the navy during the current year.
The construction of the most powerful air-defence ship would also commence at Cochin shipyard this year, Singh said.
Expressing satisfaction over budgetary allocation for navy, he said its share in the total defence outlay had gone up from 15 per cent last year to 17.7 per cent in the current year's budget.
The naval chief said the fleet of eastern command was being strengthened keeping in view its growing importance. Recalling the role of Eastern Naval Command (ENC) during the 'Operation Parakram', he said it represented the largest ever mobilisation of personnel from three wings of armed forces since 1971 war and complimented ENC for deployment of eastern fleet ships in western theatre during the operation.
