Diphu, Mar 18: Three members of a Nepali community were shot dead by suspected militants in Thailung village of Singhason Hills in daylight, police said. The incident occurred at a place under Diphu police station which is about 40 km from here in a high altitude area of Singhason Hills.
Police yesterday said the incident took place when a group of seven Nepali labourers went there to collect ginger from the plantation area belonging to local Kuki community from Longnit area, 15 km from there.
Suspected extremists opened fire at them killing three on the spot. Four of them managed to escape.
However, local police till now were not sure about the assailants. According to a senior police officer it could be either of outlawed Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) or United People Democratic Solidarity (UPDS-anti-talk). Earlier, the UPDS had imposed ban on cultivation and trade of ginger by Kuki population of Singhason area. On the other hand the KRA might have targeted these people assuming them to be thieves stealing ginger from the field of the Kuki cultivators.
The bodies were recovered from that remote area early morning yesterday.
A large contingent of police and army was combing the area in search of ultras.
Police have recovered few empty cases of ak-47 ammunition from the spot.
