Kathmandu, Feb 15: Suspected Maoist insurgents have shot dead chairman of the Maoist Victims' Association (MVA), Ganesh Chiluwal, in Kathmandu today, police said. A group of Maoists entered the office of the association at Bagbazar, in the heart of Kathmandu and shot him, police added.

Chiluwal was working for the welfare of the Maoists victims since the formation of the association four years ago.

No arrests have been made so far, police added.


Earlier, the MVA had burnt the effigies of Maoists leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prachanda and Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Friday marking the day as the black day.

The association had taken out a rally denouncing violence and murder perpetrated by Maoists and burnt the effigies of the Maoists in protest against the atrocities committed by the insurgents.

Chiluwal had said that around 9,000 people were killed and 20,000 injured and thousands displaced during the eight-year-long insurgency in the Himalayan Kingdom.

The rebels have been fighting to establish a communist style republic in Nepal replacing the constitutional monarchy. More than 8,500 people have been killed in the insurgency since 1996.
Maoist rebels have abducted at least 400 women from Bhaikhale area in Achham district, according to the leading news portal Kantipur online.

Meanwhile, an armed group of Maoists abducted 400 women on Friday and yesterday for not cooperating with local insurgents, the portal quoting local officials said.
