Mumbai, Nov 08: In a day of fast-paced developments in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam probe, Mumbai Police Commissioner R S Sharma was today questioned for over four hours in two sessions even as a special court in Pune remanded Joint Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) Sridhar Vagal to police custody under MCOCA till November 13. In a related development, sit seized five weapons from the residence of Vagal last night soon after his arrest. Of these, one is Vagal's service revolver while the rest are foreign made weapons, SIT sources told reporters.
Sharma, who retires as Mumbai Police chief on November 30, was grilled by sit on allegations made by a senior police officer S M Mushriff about lopsided probe in Telgi scam case registered by Bund Garden police in Pune when Sharma was the Police Commissioner at the relevant time.
The questioning of Sharma assumes significance in the wake of Mumbai High Court order directing the head of SIT S S Puri to probe the alleged role of Sharma and other top officers in the scam and file a report on November 12.
Sharma was summoned to SIT at its Worli office in the morning and again in the afternoon, SIT sources said and added that the questioning is likely to continue tomorrow.
Police said SIT had unearthed vital documents from the boots of Vagal's official car which pertain to his investments of alleged ill-gotten money. The documents, stacked in three briefcases, were recovered last night during a raid by SIT.
Seeking his remand, prosecutor Raja Thakre said Vagal had fabricated evidence to shield Telgi and taken Rs 72 lakh from him through another police officer who has been arrested.
