A special court sentenced an associate of Karachi-based don Dawood Ibrahim to five years' Rigorous Imprisonment for circulating counterfeit notes in India allegedly at the behest of Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, to destabilise the economy. Atul Kantilal Shah was convicted by the designated judge A P Bhangale under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and IPC provisions for possessing counterfeit notes and circulating them.
On both the counts, he was asked to undergo five years RI each and pay a fine of Rs five lakh. The substantive sentences would run concurrently.
The court observed that the case in respect of absconding accused Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees Ibrahim would remain dormant and revive as and when they are caught.
Atul was arrested on April 25 last year near Amba Mata temple in suburban Goregaon. He was carrying counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination. Police subsequently raided his house and seized a huge stock of currency notes.
Prosecution, led by Rohini Salian, examined witnesses to show Atul's involvement in the crime. During interrogation, Atul had admitted that he used to receive currency notes from absconding accused Ashok Bhansali who in turn received instructions from another accused Aftab Batki.
The entire gang used to work for Dawood Ibrahim, who had hatched a conspiracy to destabilise the country's economy.
