Jalandhar, Sept 13: The district police have arrested 22 proclaimed offenders wanted in heinous crime cases for long, a senior police official said today. A special wing, re-organised recently to apprehend a large number of absconders or bail jumpers, has achieved remarkable success by arresting 22 proclaimed offenders within a week, district police chief Harpreet Singh Sidhu said. The entire record pertaining to proclaimed offenders (POs) has been computerised at the police station-level, he said, adding 2688 proclaimed offenders were listed in the district and their whereabouts were being verified in a phased-manner.
The whereabouts of about 800 POs have already been verified and their arrests were expected within six months, Sidhu said, adding during the initial phase, 30 POs have been found to be dead and the process has been initiated to delete their names from the list. He said several POs have gone abroad and after tracing their present whereabouts, necessary action as per the law would be taken to intimate the Interpol to enable their arrest, he said. Bureau Report
