Following a severe indictment by it for failing to take action leading to communal riots in the state, Gujarat government on Monday filed its response to the National Human Rights Commission's (NHRC) preliminary comments and recommendations. However, a response was awaited from Centre, which along with the state government was asked to respond to the NHRC's comments and recommendations within 15 days.

We have received a report from Gujarat government on Monday but we are yet to receive the response from home ministry. We are sending a reminder to them, the NHRC sources told reporters.

The NHRC had asked for a response within two weeks to enable further consideration of this matter by the commission without any avoidable delay. While releasing its report on April 1, the commission had accused Gujarat government of failing to take action leading to communal riots in the state and asked it to entrust investigation of critical cases of violence to CBI and establish special courts to try them.

However, the state government's report is not expected to be discussed in the commission immediately with NHRC chairman J S Verma away to Geneva for a UN conference and he is scheduled to return only by April 26.

We will inform the chairman about the report and if he wants it to be faxed there, we will do so, the sources said.
