New Delhi, Mar 18: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said on Thursday that Caller Line Identification of a calling party on cellular phones should not be "blocked", but it would not come out with any paper in this regard.
"We are not coming out with any paper but our position is that CLI should not be blocked. If it is blocked for certain reason of privacy, the operators should know the CLI number being blocked," TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal said on the sidelines of 'Convergence India 2004' exposition.

Baijal's comments on caller line identification come in the backdrop of celullar subscribers getting calls with "private numbers" written on their handsets, as part of campaign by various political parties.

Asked if TRAI had received requests for blocking CLI, Baijal said, "No we have not got requests. The operators must have got requests."

"But we do not encourage blocking of CLI."
