Srinagar, Mar 03: The Border Security Force (BSF) today claimed to have killed the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant involved in the assassination bid on the life of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in the central Kashmir last week. Elsewhere in the valley a militant of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad and a counter-insurgent were killed overnight. A BSF spokesman said troops of the 50 battalion, on specific information, conducted search operations in a village near Kunzer in the central Kashmir district of Baramulla last night.
He said as troops were sealing the village, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenades. In the ensuing retaliatory fire by troops, the Hizbul 'battalion commander' Hamid Sheikh alias Waseem, was killed.
One girl was killed and six others were wounded in the attack. However, Sayeed and his cabinet colleagues escaped unhurt. One AK rifle, three magazines, 20 rounds of ammunition and 20 UBGL grenades were seized from the slain militant.
Official sources said one Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed in an encounter at Chandigam in the frontier district of kupwara last night. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were seized from the slain militant. Elsewhere, militants shot dead a counter-insurgent at Arigam Bandipora last night.
