Mumbai, Oct 31: The Union Petroleum Ministry may dispute Reliance Industries Ltd's (RIL) announcement today of having achieved 100 per cent success in discovering gas from five wells in the Krishna-Godavari basin.
"According to information given to us by RIL, the company has drilled four wells, contrary to their announcement of five. Moreover as per our information one of these was abandoned due to technical difficulties", senior petroleum ministry sources told a news agency.
They said the ministry would draw RIL's attention on the matter and seek exact details of the find.
Union Petroleum Minister Ram Naik told reporters that RIL "has indeed struck gas in four exploration wells", which was a "very significant and important" discovery and the quantum of the gas was as good as that produced by ONGC's bassien field.
Ambani told shareholders at the annual general meeting that RIL "had achieved 100 per cent success in all the five wells it had drilled so far in the block with in place volumes of natural gas in excess of seven trillion cubic feet, which is equivalent to about 1.2 billion barrels or 165 million tonnes of crude oil".
