Warning of the extreme severity of threat posed by terrorism and religious extremism, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday asserted that a sustained campaign, assisted by a legal framework, was needed to tackle the twin menace.
Inaugurating a meeting of inter-state council in New Delhi, Vajpayee said the prevention of terrorism ordinance has been promulgated as there was no law in place to deal effectively with terrorism after the lapse of TADA.
“Our experience against terrorism has clearly demonstrated that we have to have a combat programme, whose crucial ingredient has to be sustainability. Sustainability is a product of strong political will, capabilities of the security forces and last but not the least, an enabling legislative framework, he said.
Dwelling on some major problems facing the Centre and the states, Vajpayee said, “Chief among them is the threat posed by terrorism and religious extremism. The recent terrorist attack in US have starkly highlighted both the global scope and the extreme severity of this threat.”
Seeking the views of the chief ministers on the need to strengthen the existing legal framework to assist the battle against terrorism, Vajpayee said that the law commission has opined that such a law was needed. It has also been the longstanding demand of our security forces, he added.
