United Nations, Oct 16: Capping a high-pressure American diplomacy making critics fall in line, the United Nations Security Council today unanimously adopted the US resolution on Iraq giving legitimacy to the American-led administration to rule the country till an elected government is installed. Despite strong reservations and rejection of main changes suggested by them, France, Russia and Germany, which had steadfastly opposed the US-led war on Iraq, voted in favour of the draft. The US resolution calls for establishment of multinational force under American command and asks the Iraqi governing council to submit a timetable for writing a constitution and holding elections under it by December 15. It gives important but not central role to the UN but says it takes on the responsibility as the circumstances permit. That would allow secretary general to delay the world body playing any major role till the security situation in Iraq improves. Bureau Report
