Hyderabad, Aug 24: Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee has called for an effective mechanism to deal with the process of impeachment of corrupt judges in the country. Delivering the address on ''legal and judicial system in India'' here yesterday, he said an overwhelming majority of judges were honest and hardworking. Only a few were deviant. ''the entire institution should not be denegrated because of a corrupt few'' he said.

Sorabjee also suggested that only judicial officers should be appointed to deal with the process of impeachment of judges and the bar should also play a key role in checking corruption. ''Corruption could not take place without involvement of the bar members'', he added. The Attorney General also called for exposing allegations as part of motivated campaign and said the corrupt should not be forgiven.

Referring to the exorbitant fee charged by the lawyers, Sorabjee felt that the advocates should charge less fee considering their noble profession.

Regarding the Supreme Court decision on strike by government employees he said the apex court had ''overreacted'' by holding strikes as illegal. “How can it say no to strike ? What is the remedy for the employees if their demands are not met for several years in a row.” Bureau Report
