Lucknow, Jan 06: Congress, which extends outside support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led alliance government in Uttar Pradesh, today said it would not field a candidate in Gunnaur Vidhan Sabha constituency from where the Chief Minister was contesting the by-election. The decision had been taken on the instruction of AICC president Sonia Gandhi with a view to "strengthen and unite the secular forces", UPCC president Jagadambika Pal said here.
Pal said the party did not want "division of secular votes" by fielding a candidate against Yadav.
Yadav had yesterday filed his nomination for the January 24 polls. Bureau Report
