New Delhi, Mar 22: Despite rejection by the BSP and SP of any tie-up with it in Uttar Pradesh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday still held hopes for an alliance in the key state but made it clear that it was prepared to go it alone "without any fear" if the situation so warranted.
"The situation is not final and so the question does not arise. If we cannot ally with other parties, we are absolutely prepared to go it alone without any fear," she told reporters giving mixed signals on the crucial issue.

She was asked whether the congress was being forced to go it alone in view of the reluctance of Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party to have an alliance with it.

Sonia dubbed as "most unfair" the reported statement of SP general secretary Amar Singh that the Congress had closed all the options for a secular alliance.

"It is most unfair. From the beginning I have been calling on leaders of all like-minded parties (about it). It is absolutely untrue and not a fact," she remarked.
Asked about Congress' stand on the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya, Sonia said her party was for a court verdict. If there is a negotiated settlement among the concerned parties, it must have the legal sanction, she said.
Sonia did not attach much significance to the Samajwadi Party's decision to field candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli, saying "these things happen in elections". Bureau Report
