Rameswaram, Oct 12: The BSNL would soon set up an 80-metre high communication tower to enable the people of Rameswaram to make calls to Sri Lanka's Mannar region. According to BSNL sources the tower would provide direct communication link to the island nation from Rameswram island.

The telephone and mobile phone links would be established before December between Rameswaram and Sri Lanka's northern peninsula, they said. The direct telephone link to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka got snapped in 1983, when the militants blew up the communication tower put up there. Since then the region was linked to Sri Lanka through Tiruchirappalli, an official told a news agency here. Meanwhile, police officials were worried that the communication link could be misused by the smugglers and militants, intelligence officials said today.

The BSNL officials, however, said the people could not be deprived of such facilities. Bureau Report
