After a two-day sit-in outside the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) on Saturday struck reconciliation following assurances from minister Satyanarayan Jatiya but warned that their fight for the rights of the people displaced by the dam projects on Narmada river would continue.
Claiming that authorities had "neither fully studied nor planned" downstream impacts of dam projects, NBA leader Medha Patkar told reporters that raising of height of Sardar Sarovar Project by 100 metres from 90 metres would not be allowed.
She also demanded that NBA representatives be given observation status in the two sub-groups -- Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R & R) and Environment Sub-group.
After holding meetings with Jaitya and R & R Sub-group Chairman Gopal Reddy, Patkar said that the minister had assured the activists that he would look into their issues seriously and his ministry would not tolerate any injustice to the families of those affected by the Sardar Sarovar Project.
"Gopal Reddy also assured that no permission had been granted for further construction on the dam," she said.
"With regard to the proposed amendment to introduce cash compensation instead of land, Reddy said the required process would proceed only in accordance with the Supreme Court judgement," Patkar said. Bureau Report
