A thief who wanted to break into an apartment in the southern Swedish city of Malmo was rescued by police after spending 11 hours trapped in an elevator, TT news agency has reported.
The 39-year old man took the elevator to break into a basement studio on Monday night, and prized open the locked elevator doors with a screwdriver.

He did not know the elevator was made to lock itself if doors were opened by force and was trapped when he stepped in.

Desperate to get out, he ripped out electric cabling, smashed windows in the doors and even tried to set the studio apartment on fire in a bid to set off the fire alarm and be rescued by the fire brigade.
But the fire did not catch and instead of the fire brigade he was met in the morning by police and the maintenance crew, exchanging the elevator for a police cell. Bureau Report
