Kolkata, Dec 29: Over 2.50 lakh jute mill workers in about 65 mills across West Bengal have launched an indefinite strike today after the marathon tripartite meeting, convened at the instance of the state government, failed to resolve the crisis in the industry. The contentious issue of arrears payment of the dearness allowances remained unresolved, with both the trade unions and the Indian Jute Mills' Association (IJMA) along with the owners adamant to budge from their respective stand.
Officials said that while the trade unions pressed for their demands for immediate payment of arrears DA, without linking it with the production, the IJMA and the mill owners insisted that productivity-linked wages be introduced to sustain the growth of the industry.
State's Labour Minister Md Amin said he would again call another round of tripartite meeting in two to three days to arrive at an amicable solution.
According to the sources, some of the demands were conceded in the last tripartite meeting held on January 05, 2001, but neither the owners nor the workers agree on the issue of arrears D A payment.
Of the 59 jute mills, having a workforce of 2.50 lakh, five are closed and some are facing closure, in the state where 40 lakh jute growers are directly or indirectly involved with the industry. Bureau Report
