Itanagar, Apr 02: Panchayat elections in Arunachal Pradesh today passed off peacefully except in Tirap district where the poll was cancelled as the law and order situation was found not conducive for ballotting. Braving inclement weather, rural voters came in large numbers to the polling booths and though the state election commission could not immediately furnish the percentage of voter turn out, the polling was brisk throughout the state. Altogether 6632 gram sabha members, 1643 anchal samities and 135 zilla parishad members were being elected by 4,09,539 voters, said J M Tangu, state election commissioner and added the law and order situation in Tirap district would be reviewed before holding polls there.
The counting of votes would start from April 7 and all results were expected by April 12, Tangu told reporters here. Bureau Report
