Mumbai, Oct 27: A local court has deferred until November 20 the commencement of trial against six members of Dawood Ibrahim gang facing charge of criminal conspiracy to kill key politicians, including Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani. On October 17, sessions judge D V Marathe had framed charges against them and the trial was slated to begin on October 25 but prosecutor Srikant Bhatt was not present.

On a plea by defence lawyer Majeed Memon, the court ordered the prosecution to give the accused the copies of all the documents on which it wished to rely upon in the trial. The accused were charged with an offence under section 121-A IPC, a stringent law, namely, waging war against nation. They are also charged with other offences including conspiracy under section 120-B IPC.

The case of the prosecution is that the gangsters had conspired to assassinate prominent political figures including Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and planned to strike at key installations in Mumbai and elsewhere. Two of them were arrested last year in a case of theft. During interrogation, they revealed their plans to kill prominent politicians and trigger explosions at important public places. Their disclosure led to the arrest of four others from Chennai and Bangalore.

The documents seized from their possession confirmed their sinister plans to create terror in the country by killing politicians. The accused are Javed Khan, Akbar Hussain, Srinivas Naidu, Zakir Hussain, Mohammed Saddiq and Farooq Ghani.
