The statistics are simply crazy. In another decade, the burden caused by mental diseases around the world will only be next to cardiovascular disorders. For Delhi, that's like a mental time bomb ticking away to an anxious explosion.
Consider this: In the past 10-15 years, the number of psychiatry departments/hospitals has steadily grown in the Capital. "This suggests that mental illnesses are on the rise," says Dr Sudhir K Khandelwal, Department of Psychiatry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). However, there are only about 300 mental health professionals working in Delhi. That's about three professionals per one lakh people, a woefully inadequate number considering the meteoric rise of mental cases.
