Narmada Bachao Andolan activists on Thursday laid siege to the main entrance of Shastri Bhawan, which houses several important ministries, protesting non-implementation of the Supreme Court order on rehabilitation of Sardar Sarovar Dam project-affected. The protestors, led by NBA leader Medha Patkar and Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy, blocked the main entrance of Shastri Bhawan demanding that the height of the dam should not be raised without completing the mandatory rehabilitation of villagers affected by the project. Addressing the protestors, Patkar said the Centre and the Gujarat government had assured the apex court that all project-affected would be rehabilitated before raising the height of the dam any further.

However, no proper rehabilitation has taken place in villages which would go under water if the dam height was raised from the present 90 metres, she said.
Accusing the government of misleading the court, Patkar said if rehabilitation measures were not taken, the villagers would refuse to vacate their houses. Bureau Report
