New Delhi, Oct 27: In a bid to check tax evasion,
government has drawn up a list of individuals whose mobile
phone bills exceed Rs 50,000 for scrutiny of income tax
returns.
"We have collected details (of individuals with mobile
bills exceeding Rs 50,000). We will take action at the
appropriate time," Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman P L
Singh said today.
CBDT is reported to have circulated the list of individuals whose mobile bills are much higher than their salaries and above Rs 50,000.
Singh, however, did not clarify whether the income tax offices have been asked to carry out scrutiny on that basis.
Meanwhile, a voluntary organisation 'Parivartan', which has launched a crusade against corruption, has written a letter to Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and Minister of State for Finance Sripad Naik requesting them to restrain CBDT from harassing income tax assessees under the garb of scrutiny.
"We have also demanded that the CBDT should adopt a transparent approach while selecting cases for scrutiny," Parivartan secretary S Mangal said.
"We want CBDT to come up with a comprehensive advertisement in newspaper about the methodology adopted by the income tax department for selection of such scrutiny cases," he added.
