Raipur, Oct 11: The ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh
today complained to the Election Commission that the Centre
had violated the model code of conduct by issuing
advertisements in newspapers to publicise its achievements
after announcement of the schedule for elections in five
states.
The code of conduct was in force in the five states
following announcement of the election schedule, but the
Centre released advertisements through its agency, DAVP, in
the newspapers in Chhattisgarh, in `violation of the model
code of conduct', state PCC spokesman Shailesh Nitin Trivedi
told the Election Commission.
In a petition to the commission, copies of which were
released to the media, congress said the publicity to
highlight the achievements of the Centre, spending money from
the exchequer, was an open violation of the code since BJP
contesting in all the states was a partner of the NDA
government.
"It is to influence the voters by spending government
money and a step to give political mileage to BJP, hence
action should be initiated against those who have released it
and also steps should be taken so that in future such things
are not repeated, the petition said."
Later talking to a news agency, Trivedi said they have also attached copies of the newspaper advertisements published yesterday and today "which contained wrong information as well".
