Geneva, Aug 28: Around 500 friends and family of Sergio Vieira de Mello gathered at a Catholic church in Geneva today for the funeral of the UN diplomat who was killed in the bombing of the UN compound in Baghdad last week. The UN High Commission of Human Rights, which Vieira de Mello headed, was to host a memorial later in the day in honour of the slain diplomat, who died aged 55 on August 19. De Mello served as a UN diplomat for more than three decades, acting as trouble-shooter in hot spots including Kosovo, East Timor and Rwanda. The silver-haired diplomat was considered one of the leading lights of the United Nations and a potential future Secretary-General. Bureau Report
